Peggy Joyce Peel

Peggy Joyce (Hammond) Peel of Piedmont, Alabama passed away peacefully in her home on June 18, 2026, at the age of 90. She was born October 16, 1935 in Geneva, Alabama to Luther and Louise Hammond. Peggy married Elisha Pittman (Pitt) Peel in Geneva, Alabama on May 28, 1954, and the two of them were inseparable, with a deep love and respect for one another. Peggy and Pitt had two beautiful daughters, Sabrina (Peel) Steckline and Teresa (Peel) Sanford, both born in Brinkley, Arkansas. Peggy was very adamant that her girls received a good education, both becoming strong and independent women. Peggy and Pitt moved their family to Piedmont in 1971, where Peggy became a faithful member of First Baptist Church. Peggy held a number of jobs, including a Kindergarten teacher, agent with Guttery Insurance Agency in Piedmont and manager of the Jacksonville State University Bookstore. She also loved to assist Ann Wilkes with her decorating business. She excelled at everything she did. Peggy also had fun, having been a member of the Piedmont Red Hat Club and the Sunshine Club for several years. She loved her lady friends. Most important of all, she introduced her family to Walt Disney World. Peggy loved to nurture her family and was especially excited to see her children come home for vacations and holidays after they left the nest. She always made certain the buffet was filled with desserts and the pantry full of sweets when they arrived. She would ensure that she rose before everyone in the morning and created an awesome breakfast waiting for them. Peggy is survived by her daughter, Teresa Sanford, her husband, Phil Sanford, grandson, Brandon Sanford, as well as granddaughter, Alexis Sanford. Peggy was preceded in death in 2025 by her husband, Pittman, and in 2010 by her daughter, Sabrina Steckline, and is survived by her husband, Terry Steckline, granddaughters Jessica Gentry and Christy Steckline and great- granddaughter Mandie Gentry. Visitation with friends and family will be Tuesday, June 23, 2026 at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Thompson Funeral Home, 6340 Old Piedmont Gadsden Hwy, Piedmont, Alabama. No graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sanctuary Renovation Project at First Baptist Church of Piedmont, Alabama, in her name.
