James Elvin Smith

Funeral service for James Elvin Smith, 80, of Piedmont will be Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 2:00 P.M. at Thompson Funeral Home with Rev. Jeffery McElroy and Rev. Kenneth Boles officiating. Burial will follow at Faith Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Smith passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026 at Riverview Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his children, James Alan Smith of Huntsville, Dayna Kay Smith of Pelham, Jason Smith (Stephanie) of Ashland and Raegan Smith of Piedmont; chosen daughter, Shaina Fortenberry; six grandchildren; Claudiya Parsons, Shyann Smith, Tucker Korns, Madison Korns, Skianna Smith and Tessa Smith; seven great-grandchildren, Dexter Wright. Rayden Wright, Landyn Parsons, Aubree Parsons, Oakley Karr, Ellie-Mae Karr and Lacey Spicer; one sister, Marlene Ellis of Piedmont, two brothers, Larry Smith (Judy) of Piedmont and John Smith (Jane) of White Plains and many nieces, nephews and other family members. Pallbearers will be Alan Smith, Jason Smith, Marty Smith, Gary Smith, Jeremy Parsons and Joe Ganato. Mr. Smith was a life long resident of Piedmont and a charter member of Faith Baptist Church. He was a faithful member and was always there when the doors were opened. He retired from the trucking industry, enjoyed telling corny jokes, and had a personality that shined wherever he went. He had a way of making you feel special and loved. He was a die-hard Alabama football fan and his favorite snack of all time was Jif peanut butter. His family was the center of his life and he loved them dearly. He was an avid outdoor man, whether it was cutting grass with the grandkids on the lawn mower, or hunting and fishing. You could find him every morning, seven days a week at Jack’s, sitting at the round table, greeting his friends and sharing his wisdom. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years, Rose Smith; grandson, B.J. Smith; parents, Lloyd and Pearlie Mae Smith; two sisters, Joyce Danielmeyer and Brenda Johnson and three brothers, Norman Smith, Rev. Orville Smith and Travis Smith.
