Funeral services for Charles D. "Sonny" Ray, 72, of Piedmont will be Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Jay Daugherty and Mr. Eddie Lindsey officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Ray passed away Saturday, April 20, 2013 at RMC in Anniston. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Pat Borden Ray; one son, Charles D. "Chuck" Ray, Jr. (Lori) of Piedmont; two daughters, Kelly Rampy of Piedmont and Allison Ragsdale (Adam) of Guntersville; three grandsons, Jonathan Ray, Dustin Ray and Chase Rampy; two granddaughters, Kelsie Ragsdale and Maggie Beth Ragsdale; three sisters, Margie Adderhold (Harry) of Piedmont, Sue Mobbs of Cedar Bluff and Yvonne Cavin of Gaylesville; one brother, C. W. Ray (Teresa) of Cedar Bluff; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jonathan Ray, Dustin Ray, Chase Rampy, David Rampy, Barry Davis and Elbert McCollugh. Honorary pallbearers will be the Jack's Table of Knowledge. Mr. Ray was a resident of Piedmont for over 50 years. He served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. Corporal Ray received citation for heroic achievement in aerial flight as a Helicopter Crew Chief in Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron ONE HUNDRED SIXTY-TWO during rescue operations in the Republic of Vietnam. Corporal Ray was awarded the Air Medal with Gold Star in recognition for meritorious achievement. He retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company with 35 years of service, was a successful drag racer, a wonderful husband, father, and paw paw and lived his life to the fullest. He attended the Piedmont Congregational Methodist Church. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Piedmont Rescue Squad, P.O.Box 333, Piedmont, AL 36272.
