Dr. John R. Kirkpatrick

Services for Dr. John R. Kirkpatrick, 87, of Piedmont will be Monday, December 26, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with Dr. Mickey Morgan and Chaplain David Bolin officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Dr. Kirkpatrick passed away Friday, December 23, 2016 at his home. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Eleanor Kirkpatrick; son, John Kirkpatrick, Jr. (Elaine) of Prattville; daughter, Harriet Kirkpatrick Pope (Garry) of Rainbow City; four grandchildren, Scott Kirkpatrick (Amy) of Vestavia Hills, Neil Kirkpatrick of Atlanta, Ga., Morgan Harris (Colton) of Jacksonville, and Kirk Pope of Tuscaloosa; three great grandchildren, Will Kirkpatrick, John Pierce Kirkpatrick, and Grace Kirkpatrick; one sister, Linda Fagan of Piedmont; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Garry Pope, Kirk Pope, Colton Harris, Scott Kirkpatrick, Neil Kirkpatrick, and Arnold Young. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Frank Wofford Sunday School Class of the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont. Dr. Kirkpatrick was a native and lifelong resident of Piedmont. He was a graduate of Piedmont High School where he was an avid sportsman. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Jacksonville State University and his doctorate from the University of Alabama. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher, coach and principal for 13 years and served at superintendent of Piedmont City Schools for 17 years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont for 60 years where he was a member of the choir and was the teacher of the Frank Wofford Sunday School Class. He was a former member of the Piedmont Lions Club, the Piedmont Jaycees, the Alabama Education Association and was an honorary member of the Piedmont High School Blue Knights Band. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. John Kirkpatrick Scholarship Fund at Piedmont High School or the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont. The family would like to thank New Beacon Hospice, Home Helpers of Jacksonville and the First United Methodist Church of Piedmont for all of their love, care and support.
